Oliphant Kite spots
Revised June 23, 2010
By Daniel Medysky

There are 2 bays to kite at in Oliphant. North Oliphant, also known as Sandy Bay Cove, is the northernmost of the Oliphant Fishing Islands. The area is a flat-water haven, offering clean, shallow water and a large beach. It gets good on west and northwest winds and is ideal for beginners and experts alike. The bay here is large enough to accommodate more than 50 kiters, but it can get crowded in summer. This is the region's most beginner-friendly beach, so you'll find several kite schools using its waters.

There are two places to launch in North Oliphant. The first is Merry Street. The second is at the end of Spry Lake Road in front of Sandy Bay Cove Restaurant. Due to the increasing number of kiters, there have been calls to restrict access here, but local kiteboarders are working on a plan with the town to preserve access. This will more than likely involve a parking area directly in front of the restaurant and another parking lot  next to the Merry St. access point.

A few kilometers south along Shoreline Ave. is South Oliphant. Located at the end of Oliphant Way, between Lonely Island and Whiskey Island, the small bay holds about 30 kiters and works best on southwest winds. The shallow water and sandy bottom is perfect for all skill levels. Summers get busy with cottagers, and kiters should respect designated swim areas. Parking is available  in front of & next to the public washrooms  (small brown building) located in front of the old Oliphant dance Pavilion  at the T junction of Oliphant Way & Shoreline Ave.

We anticipate all 3 parking lots to be in erected sometime during the summer of 2010.

Please obey all signs and help keep our kite beaches clean & safe at all times.

Despite being so far north and nowhere even close to an ocean, Ontario's Bruce Peninsula really is an amazing
kiting spot. After all, it spawned world-class freestyler Sam Medysky (Best Kiteboarding team rider), so there must be something special happening here!
